Financial Aid

The University of Florida allows students to use financial aid with any UF-approved study abroad program, whether sponsored by UF or another institution. If you are already approved for financial aid, your package could be applied to the UF-approved program of your choice. Students must be registered full-time to use most forms of aid.

Scholarships

The UF International Center sponsors a large number of study abroad scholarships. Please scroll below to browse the scholarship offerings for academic year, semester, and summer UFIC scholarships. In addition to the UFIC scholarships, many UF colleges and departments, as well as national organizations, offer study abroad scholarships. A list of these awards is also provided below.

Alliance Scholars and Opportunity Scholars are eligible for special scholarships. Please see your program advisor for more details.

How to Apply

Eligibility:  

  • Each applicant must have at least a 3.0 to apply.
  • Each applicant must be a UF undergraduate and a US citizen or legal permanent resident to qualify for consideration. 
  • Students who will be studying  abroad during the summer semester must participate in programs of four weeks or longer to be eligible for a scholarship. 
  • Students do not have to apply to a study abroad program in order to apply for scholarships.

Submit all of the following:

  • Online scholarship application (Click this link to start the application process)
  • Scholarship essay (submitted online--see below for topic-250-300 words)
  • Unofficial UF transcript (submitted to the UFIC in 170 HUB)
  • A brief statement of financial need (no more than 150 words written by applicant online)
  • One Letter of Recommendation from a Faculty or Graduate Teaching Assistant (submitted online)

Essay:  The purpose of the essay is to give your reasons for wanting to study abroad.  In the essay, you should discuss why you have chosen the particular program and country as well as your role as an informal "ambassador" of the University of Florida and the USA.  Please illustrate that you have considered the effect of this international program, its values and experiences, on your career and life aspirations.  Your essay needs to be between 250-300 words.

NOTE:
  All required application materials must be submitted by the scholarship deadline.  Incomplete or late applications are NOT accepted.  All materials will be submitted online except for the unofficial transcript.  Transcripts must be turned in at 170 HUB.  Essays submitted as hard copies will not be accepted and the corresponding application will be considered incomplete.

Daniel Sinclair Bredahl Scholarship for Academic Year

With his family, Dan Bredahl lived in Islamabad, Pakistan [age 4]; Jaipur, India [age 14]; and Besançon, France [age 22]. From these experiences, he learned to value and enjoy alternative ways to view people and cultures, what he called "the need to see how other people live." From his friend, the writer Scott Anderson, he discovered the opportunity of international journalism. In his memory, the Daniel Bredahl Scholarships are designed so that other Florida students can discover the possibilities that await fellow travelers. Students must submit a copy of their financial aid award letter along with other required application materials.

Study Abroad in Utrecht, the Netherlands

Marco Souer Academic Year in Utrecht Scholarship

Marco Hermanus Hendrik Rudolf Souer was a student at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands where he majored in Social and Institutional Economics. He participated in the University of Florida-University of Utrecht exchange in 1998-99. In his statement indicating why he wanted to study in America, he wrote, "The stay in the United States is a great opportunity for me to get in contact with the American way of living and its culture. The American culture has always had my interest. "It is in Marco's memory that this scholarship has been established to further the opportunity for young people to study abroad and to help them better understand the ways in which our societies and cultures are increasingly interconnected.

Center for Jewish Studies Scholarships

While travel to Israel is discouraged by a State Department advisory, the Center awards COMPETETIVE study abroad scholarships to students for study abroad programs outside Israel that offer Jewish Studies curricula. National Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Founded under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 this congressionally-funded program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in US study abroad and those with high financial need. The program aims to encourage students to choose nontraditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia and aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. This includes but is not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students of nontraditional age. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public and private institutions from all 50 states.
Amount: up to $5000 Eligibility: U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and not studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Dept of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.
