The UF Art department offers a program featuring Caribbean Woodcarving and Tropical Ecosystems Issues on Andros Island in the Bahamas. The Mari-time Arts and Inspiration Center has a beachfront studio enabling students to develop direct carving techniques with Master Carver Henry Wallace. HIGHLIGHTS ~ Learn to sculpt in tropical hardwoods ~ Lodging at alternative energy beach camp ~ Snorkel huge coral reefs ~ Study unique Bahamian culture and environment COURSE OFFERINGS One course for 3 UF GPA credits ART 2930, ART 4930, or ART 5905: Interdisciplinary Field Studies in Art The final grade considers participation, delivery of two reports plus final exam. 2010 PROGRAM FEE $1,762 - undergraduates) $2,509 - graduates) Fee includes UF tuition, meals, housing, transportation on island, snorkeling trips, field trips, international health insurance which includes medical emergency assistance. (Cost for round-trip air travel is additional. Transportation through Nassau is not recommended. Air transportation to Andros Island is best arranged though International Field Studies: 1-800-962-3805.) ELIGIBILITY Undergraduate and graduate students. No experience required. UF in Andros Island The Maritime Arts and Inspiration Center (MAIC) is designed to empower artists and promote ideas of sustainability in rural island communities. Boat-building, Fiber Sculpture and Woodcarving are taught year-round. Students will be able to explore the coral reef, learn tropical biology and culture studies. The MAIC seeks to embrace the past and confront the future, empower artisans and environmental education. Rural Andros is the largest island in the Bahamas but is very undeveloped.
HOUSING The program fee allows participants to stay on the beach in a Chickee thatched camp. A restored 1935 stone schoolhouse serves as the dining room and meeting place. Alternative energy sources - solar and wind provide electricity. (See photo to the right.) ACADEMIC CREDITS As this program is a UF program, the credits earned can satisfy major, minor, and university requirements with prior approval. UF GPA credit will be granted for the course as it is taken with UF faculty.
FINANCIAL AID University of Florida students needing financial aid should apply through UF Student Financial Affairs (SFA). Non-UF students needing financial aid must apply to their home institutions.
