UF in Cairns, Australia Known as the Sunshine State, Queensland is home to lush green rainforests, golden beaches, the remote Outback, and the spectacular marine diversity of the Great Barrier Reef. This program uses the theme of sustainable development to explore the relationship between people and their natural environment. The short program is based in tropical Cairns, where we learn from leading experts at James Cook University. A 2-week study tour includes kayaking, snorkeling and/or diving on the Great Barrier Reef, hiking and bird watching in the tropical rainforest, and experiencing Aboriginal culture and wildlife of the Outback. Queensland has a wonderful warm tropical climate throughout the year. The focus is on learning through guided action. Students spend about 60% of their time traveling the stunning national parks, forests, wildlife reserves, coastlines, and islands of Australia under the guidance of knowledgeable field professionals. The remaining time is spent in class. Group meals will be provided at special locations, and students have the flexibility to choose amongst the many cafes and restaurants, or cook for themselves in the hostel facilities. In-country transportation in a comfortable coach is provided. Students should be prepared to move and travel frequently while in the field, although many say that the bus trips are always enjoyable with such fantastic scenery out the window! Financial Aid University of Florida students needing financial aid should apply through UF Student Financial Affairs (SFA). Non-UF students needing financial aid must apply to their home institutions. Housing Students will usually stay together in comfortable hostel-style accommodations. At several of the more remote locations, they stay in safari-style tents. If traveling with someone, a student may request to room with that person for the duration of the trip. Accommodation varies, but typically rooms are shared by 2-4 students. Academic Credits 6 UF credits will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.
