UF in Fiji

Sustaining Humans and their Environment
Summer A 2018: June 10-June 19

About the Program

Spend 10 days traveling through the mainland of Fiji and one of its offshore islands. Observe Fiji firsthand with local field guides and UF professors with expertise in the fields related to ecotourism and sustainability. You can participate in the program on its own or add it onto the North Queensland Humans and the Environment or the New Zealand Adventure Recreation and Tourism programs.

About the Location

Fiji is known for its vibrant traditional culture and spectacular natural environments. This program will take place on Vitu Levu (the main island), Nadi, the Coral Coast, and Barefoot Manta Island, one of the Yasawa Islands.

Excursions include snorkeling to view coral reefs, a Fijian craft market and Kula Wild Adventure Park, kayaking class II rapids with Rivers Fiji, and spending a night with a Fijian family in a village.

Student Feedback

"Before studying in Fiji, sustainability was only a term to me. However, through living with a Fijian family and knowing that villagers depend solely on the natural environment for their livelihood, I've started to understand being environmentally responsible."

Examine human and cultural aspects of Fijian society with a focus on ecotourism and sustainability.

Experience a successful ecotourism business firsthand while kayaking down the rapids.

Conduct an ethnography in a Fijian village.

Conduct a study of an island tourism resort.
