UF in Brazil

Sustainable Engineering & Service Learning
Summer A: 5/20/2018 - 6/16/2018

About the Program

UF in Brazil will introduce students to the nature of sustainable engineering principles in a global context as it relates to civil and
environmental engineering issues. Students will participate in a service learning project with a local NGO in Brazil to develop an understanding as to where gaps in knowledge exist in sustainability and be prepared to meet those needs in their field of interest. Through this course students will be able to develop the capability and confidence to think critically about what is recommended for sustainability and to develop their own ideas and assessment.

About the Location

São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.


Excursions to cultural sites in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro – Ibirapuera Park, Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, Maracana Stadium.


You will stay in hostels in shared rooms.


You will visit local companies with a strong focus on sustainable engineering principles. 
You will visit Itaipu Dam on the Parana River between Brazil and Paraguay. 
You will visit Foz Do Iguacu Waterfalls, the largest waterfalls system in the world. 
You will engage in service learning project in sustainable technology and alternative energy in Sao Paulo.

CGN 3510: Introduction to Sustainable Engineering
Course taught by UF Faculty, Dr. Katie Indarawis, Research Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences (3 UF GPA credits)
EGN 4932: Service Learning (1 UFGPA Credits)

  • 3.0 GPA or higher

Financial Aid

Most financial aid that you would receive on campus during the summer can be applied toward the cost of this study abroadprogram; however, all financial aid eligibility is determined by Student Financial Affairs. You must speak with your financial aid advisor to determine what aid can be applied to the cost of this program, including scholarships. Any financial aid that you would receive on campus can be applied toward the cost of this study abroad program.Maracana


2018 Undergraduate Program Fee: $5,324

A $350 nonrefundable deposit toward the total cost of the program is due at the time of application. The remaining fees due no later than 45 days prior to departure. If you receive financial aid, you can defer payment until it disburses.

What's Included:

Housing, excursions, local transportation, international health insurance, and emergency medical assistance.

What's Not Included:

Round-trip airfare, meals, additional personal travel, and personal expenses.
