About the Program

The Center for African Studies at UF offers you the opportunity to earn credits toward your degree while spending a semester or academic year at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Students will choose from a number of courses at the Institute of Development Studies, e.g. Rural Development and Agricultural Transformation; Health and Development; Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution, Civil Society and Development; etc. This program is based on an exclusive agreement between the University of Florida and the University of Dar es Salaam. A three-week orientation course with intensive Swahili is offered prior to the start of classes and continued instruction in Swahili is required for those with less than one year of prior coursework.

About the Location

Public transportation and taxi services link the university with the city and nearby beaches. Daily ferry and hydroplane services connect Dar es Salaam with the island of Zanzibar. Travel is possible during term breaks to additional sites in East Africa, including Serengeti National Park, Olduvai Gorge, and Mount Kilimanjaro.
