About the ProgramThe Center for African Studies at UF offers you the opportunity to earn credits toward your degree while spending a semester or academic year at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Students will choose from a number of courses at the Institute of Development Studies, e.g. Rural Development and Agricultural Transformation; Health and Development; Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution, Civil Society and Development; etc. This program is based on an exclusive agreement between the University of Florida and the University of Dar es Salaam. A three-week orientation course with intensive Swahili is offered prior to the start of classes and continued instruction in Swahili is required for those with less than one year of prior coursework. About the LocationPublic transportation and taxi services link the university with the city and nearby beaches. Daily ferry and hydroplane services connect Dar es Salaam with the island of Zanzibar. Travel is possible during term breaks to additional sites in East Africa, including Serengeti National Park, Olduvai Gorge, and Mount Kilimanjaro. The program includes an excursion to Zanzibar and a game park. |
Course InformationCenter for African Studies You are able to choose among courses offered by the Institute of Development Studies and the Institute of Kiswahili Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam.
Seniors may develop an independent study project under the guidance of a UDSM professor and with consent from the Dean of the appropiate college. Total Number of Credits Offered: 12-15 Eligibility/Requirements

![]() Financial AidMost financial aid that you would receive on campus can be applied toward the cost of this study abroad program; however, all financial aid eligibility is determined by Student Financial Affairs. You must speak with your financial aid advisor to determine what aid can be applied to the cost of this study abroad program, including scholarships. 2018-2019 PricingUndergraduate Program Fee: TBA A $350 nonrefundable deposit toward the total cost of the program is due at the time of application. The remaining fees are due no later than 45 days prior to departure. If you receive financial aid, you can defer payment until it disburses. What's Included:Tuition for up to 15 transfer credits, housing, stipend for all meals, international health insurance, and medical emergency assistance. What's Not Included:Round-trip airfare, additional personal travel, and personal expenses. |
