About the Program

UF's "B1 Intensive German" program is a total language and culture immersion program. Classes are taught by experienced German instructors of the University of Mannheim. You are encouraged to speak German at all times. You also participate in an "Interaction Partner" program, which pairs American and German students. You meet with your interaction partners outside of class to improve your ability to speak and understand the German language as you gain insights into everyday life in the local community. At the end of the program, you will take the proficiency exam for B1 level proficiency (exam cost is included in the program). For more information on The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, search "Common European Framework." Also, Wikipedia has an accurate and concise entry.

About the Location

Mannheim provides a prime example of modern German urban life, offering a unique blend of cultural and economic activities in the heart of the historic Palatinate region.

Excursions

You will participate in a Schwarzwald Tour (lunch at Mummelsee), the Mannheim Castle Show of Lights, a cruise on the Neckar, a visit to the Palatina with a guided tour through Hambach and various wine tastings along the way, and a visit to a local brewery, where you will learn how beer is brewed. A beer tasting followed by a traditional German dinner is included in this excursion.

Housing

You will be housed in the student dormitories at the University of Mannheim. You will live in single bedrooms (with a sink) and shared bathrooms. Dorm rooms are are wired for Internet access and are in close proximity to classrooms. The dorm provides blanket, pillow and sheets but no towels.
