Leiden Swans
Leiden University is the oldest university in The Netherlands, founded in 1575 by Prince William of Orange. Today, Leiden is fully accredited modern university with an enrolment of over 18,000 students, including approximately 1,600 international students. The university buildings are interspersed throughout the town itself, which makes students' residences within walking and cycling distance of the academic buildings and city shopping areas. The City of Leiden with a population of 118,000 is conveniently located in the political, cultural and economic heart of the Netherlands.  Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht are just 30 minutes away by train and The Hague and Schiphol International Airport is just a 15 minute train ride from Leiden. While the principle language of academic instruction is Dutch, the majority of students and faculty speak English and the study abroad program is constantly increasing courses offered in English, with approximately 100 or more courses in English per semester.
